I suspect I should share this as I can see quite a few have viewed the photos. This bird (and its flock?) has been in the very same little part of the Minas Basin from Friday to Tuesday, at a minimum. "Hi Rick, Great picture of XCY! The code on the flag is unique to this particular bird. No other bird we mark with a yellow flag will ever get this same code. By doing this we can track each bird's history starting from the time we caught it. In other countries, where other flag colors are used, the code can be used again. Here's a little bit more info on this bird. At the time of capture in January 2011, we classified it as a second-year (SY) bird, meaning that it fledged in the summer of 2010. If this bird followed the typical pattern, then it remained in South America during the 2011 breeding season and made its first trip north in 2012. If this is in fact what happened, then it is making its first trip home after its first breeding season. Pretty cool! Unfortunately, we didn't collect a blood sample from this bird so we don't know its sex. Sounds like large numbers of birds are starting to move into your area so I'm hoping there will be many more reports. Finally, I don't mind answering questions so feel free to ask when you have them. Keep up the great work. Best, David David S. Mizrahi, Ph.D. Vice-president, Research and Monitoring New Jersey Audubon Society" -- Rick Whitman
