Index of Subjects --Boundary_(ID_brck/0ynmgGd8Rb5OBLTuw) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable Hi Paul, =D8 Wax Wing are not a bird I would think of as a insect feeder - more of = a seed eater but conditions must have been right. In the summer, nesting species capture insects to provide their growing you= ng a source of protein. This is even true for hummingbirds. As Cedar Waxwin= gs nest later in summer than most species, this is the time I'd expect them= to be looking for insects. Also at this time of year, many species are moulting the worn feathers they= 've carried through the breeding season and replacing them with new ones in= preparation for the southern migration. This necessitates an increase in d= ietary protein as well. All the best, Lance Lance Laviolette Glen Robertson, Ontario lance.laviolette@lmco.com From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] = On Behalf Of Paul MacDonald Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2012 9:32 PM To: Nature NS Subject: EXTERNAL: [NatureNS] Cedar Wax Wings Hi All This evening we were on the river and encountered a group of cedar wax wing= s feeding on insects at about tree height over the river. There was perhaps 50 in the group along with a few other birds all hawking whatever insect was up there. There was a few insects at water level but not many. Wax Wing are not a bird I would think of as a insect feeder - more of a see= d eater but conditions must have been right.
