We often get almost no reports of them during this time, despite = the relative wealth of observations in early spring and again when they = gather in the fall. On this years NSMC only Pictou and Victoria Counties = recorded more than one individual - the most was 8 in Pictou. There have = been few reports since then. Paul's suggestion of Wallace would be a = good one. In fact the Pictou coastline becomes something of a Hoddle = Hotbed in the fall with good numbers being seen in the Merigomish - Big = Island - Lower Barneys River area. I have personally seen them breeding = in small wooded ponds in Annapolis, Kings and Hants Counties and they = are probably more widespread than we realize. The good numbers in early = spring and fall are of course inflated by migrants passing through. Some = are obviously present right now but few people are noticing them, or at = least they are not recording their observations. I hope this will give = you a few choices. We have 5 juveniles that we've raised and need to start scouting = possible release sites. Officially the highest maintenance and most = expensive set of babies we've ever had! Have spent the last 6 weeks or = so in a constant search for small fish :) Helene --=20 Helene Van Doninck DVM Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre RR#1 Brookfield NS B0N1C0 902-893-0253 birdvet@hotmail.com www.cwrc.net No virus found in this message.
