*This Week's Sky at a Glance* *Some night sky sights for July 13 =96 21*



The two brightest stars of summer are *Vega*, very high in the east as the
stars come out, and *Arcturus*, very high in the southwest. Compare their
colors. Vega is icy white with a hint of blue; Arcturus is pale
yellow-orange.



This is the time of year when the *Big Dipper*, in the northwest after
dark, begins scooping down to the right as if preparing to scoop up water.
And the dim *Little Dipper*, standing upright from the *North Star* at the
end of its handle, begins to tip left starting its six-month downward fall.



On Thursday, July 19, the *Moon* will go into its New Phase meaning we will
not see it at all during the night as it sets and rises with the sun.
Expect higher high tides and lower low tides.



On Saturday, July 14, the *Sun *rose at 5:49 a.m. and sets at 9:08 p.m. On
Saturday, July 21, the sun will rise at 5:56 a.m. and sets at 9:02 p.m.

*Mercury* is lost in the sunset.

*Venus* and *Jupiter *(magnitudes =964.7 and =962.1) shine dramatically in =
the
east before and during dawn. They're stacked about 8=B0 apart now, with
Jupiter on top

*Mars* (magnitude +1.0) glows orange in the west-southwest at dusk.

*Saturn* (magnitude +0.8) shines in the southwest as the stars come out.
Below it by nearly 5=B0 is *Spica*, nearly the same brightness. After dark
they move lower to the west-southwest.
