Twice in the last two days my brother has observed an unusual butterfly at home in Bedford. He described it as large, orange above but dull brown below, and looking like nothing more than a dead leaf when its wings were closed. He said that its wings were not smooth curves, but scalloped or ragged along the edges. I haven't seen it myself, but this sounds like one of the anglewings, i.e.a Polygonia butterfly, perhaps a Question-Mark or one of the Commas. I see from the Payzant's website that hops, blueberries, currants, and gooseberries are among the food plants for these species; all are in my parents' garden. Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
