Directions: From the Armdale Roundabout in Halifax. Take Herring Cove Road_Ketch Harbour Road (Route 349) to Sambro. As you come into the village of Sambro, watch for and turn left at Government Wharf Road and travel a very short distance to the parking area. Our Captain is Patrick Gray who is the Harbour Master for Sambro. He operates a 40-ft Cape Island lobster boat which has two long benches for sitting on both port and starboard sides with a large open deck that can easily fit 18 people. Life jackets and safety equipment are on board and the boat will not leave if weather or the sea conditions are poor. The trip lasts for a planned time of 6-7 hours and about 25-30 km off shore. Chum (ground up fish and slurry) will be used to attract the birds closer to the boat. The cost will be approximately $45 per person which will cover the boat cost and chum. Please bring your own lunches and liquid refreshments. Sunscreen and motion sickness precautions are vital. There is a Marine Toilet just in case! Sea spray is possible, dress in layers and for wamth. Last August, we encountered Northern Gannet, Northern Fulmar, Wilson's Petrel, Pomarine Jeager, South Polar Skua, both phaloropes, Great Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, and Cory's Shearwater so this is a great way to see pelagic birds up close. There is a chance we will see Parasitic Jaeger, Great Skua, Manx Shearwater, and Leach's Petrel as well as whales, seals, porpoises, tuna. Registration is necessary as this is first-come first-serve.
