But the paddling was easy.=0AAt sundown the riv= er herring started to take flies of the surface. 10 - 12 could be seen at o= nce.=0AThey are heading out to sea and are hungry after all the efforts of = spawning.=0AAn Eagle was sitting up on a tree - looked like a second year l= ad. She/he was wanting=0Akippers for dinner and as the herring were on the = surface no doubt would have one.=0AThe eagle had an escort of grackles and = blackbirds on the trees nearby. As we watched=0Aa small hawk came shooting = by - looked like a Sharpshin but it was so fast hard to tell.=0AA grackle h= ad the misfortunate of being flying around at the time. The hawk gave chase= =0Aand they went across the river but the grackle wasn't up to the task and= as the hawk grabbed=0Ait, both disappeared into the grass on the far side.= I doubt he baked it in a pie.=0AI don't know if the hawk had learned to hu= nt near eagles or no. The grackles would be distracted=0Aand provide easy t= argets but thats how it worked.=0AJust as we were leaving a salmon jumped a= bit down river.
