Today I re-visited Wrights Cove to check up on the breeding colony on =
this tiny treeless islet, easily visible from the mainland off Windmill =
Rd. Unfortunately, there was not a tern in sight. The same situation as =
during my previous visit there about two weeks ago. Even the Canadian =
Wildlife Service caution sign is gone from the island.
Until about two years ago the gravelly islet supported a common tern =
breeding colony, and at this time of the year there would have been a =
cloud of noisy terns above it. Plus other terns fishing the shallow =
waters of Wrights Cove.
Last year the nearby shoreline on the mainland had been bulldozed and =
infilled with armour stone, in preparation for the construction of new =
houses there. Bills Island is still intact but now silent. I do wonder =
whether the terns will ever return.
