Hi Dave,

The pattern differs slightly from roost to roost but, yes, we generally see=
a spring peak near the end of May and a decline in numbers at central roos=
ts until late July, when there is a second peak. This reflects the fact tha=
t many pairs spread out from a central roost to find and nest in smaller ne=
sting chimneys in June and July. At some roost sites the spring peak is hi=
gher than the fall peak, and at others, the opposite occurs. I suppose it d=
epends on where the particular roost site is located along the birds' trave=
l route in spring and late summer. We don't have a lot of data about age co=
mposition of roosting birds over the season, but would expect a trickle of =
birds as some pairs return from failed nesting attempts, as well as an infl=
ux of young, just-fledged birds in late summer. Interestingly, some major r=
oost chimneys in southern Ontario experience two "mini peaks" in late summe=
r, comprising local breeders and fledged young, followed by those swifts pa=
ssing through southward on their way from breeding sites further north. Las=
tly, at many roosts, there remain a number of non-breeding swifts between =
the two peaks.

Hope that answers it but Jim, or other long-time observers, may have more t=
o add on this subject.

All the best,

Ally

Hi Jim & All, May 29, 2012
In the course of a typical season, does total daily traffic at these co=
mmunal roosts, decline to a minimum during the breeding season and then ris=
e to a second higher maximum ?
