Yesterday I spent most of the afternoon on the South Mountain, Kings, more specifically along the North River & Dalhousie Roads. I was looking for butterflies but only managed to find the usual 5 or so species reported before. I did find a Red-tailed Hawk nest W. of Dalhousie Road which I was unable to find in the 5 year Breeding Bird Atlas period. Ticks were however more common. After returning from one trail I picked 25 off my pants (socks rolled up over pants) & then found another 15 on my return home. This trail was a wood road with the wheel treads bare & a small amount of grass between them. I walked mostly in the treads & only crossed the centre median about 3 times so there was obviously an enormous number of ticks in that area. My wife's friends found it "gross" but I find it annoying to having to spend so much time searching for them. A consolation, I suppose, was that there were no Black-legged Ticks. Angus
