Bernard Forsythe & I spent most of today on Cape Sable Island. Our timing was not the best as we were there for 4 1/2 hours or so on both sides of high tide. But we had a great day. We had just arrived at The Hawk when Clyde Stoddart drove up. He showed us a different viewing point for The Hawk & gave us excellent advice as to where we might see American Oystercatcher & Piping Plovers. At The Hawk we had 17 Black-bellied Plovers, at least 5 Willets & perhaps 230 Brant. Clyde told us an American Oystercatcher can sometimes be seen at the Guzzle, between The Hawk & Lower Clarks Harbour, on the E side. Sure enuf there was one there & quite close to the road too. A lifer for me, 3rd time for Bernard, & some pretty decent photos too of this spectacular shore bird. At Daniel's Head there were at least 11 Black-bellied Plovers, at least 3 Willets & we found 2 Piping Plovers out on the protected beach. They were right together at one point & I definitely observed one bird digging out a (nest ?) cup with her feet & squatting down in it. At the least she was feeling broody ? Right after that she went right up to the grass line & tugged at some old rope. She then flew away down the beach. I didn't go up to the possible cup because I'm sure it's forbidden. We went back to The Hawk & I got the best Willet photos yet.
