Hi all,
Middleton Regional High School now has a link to their live "ChimneyCam" vi=
deo stream, which is available on the school's homepage. There are a few th=
ings to note when you are trying to view the feed for the first time:
1. You need to view it using Internet Explorer. Safari, Firefox or Mo=
zilla will NOT work (a design flaw on the part of the camera company, if yo=
u ask me).
2. The link is at http://www.middleton.ednet.ns.ca/ (scroll down th=
e page and click on "View cameras anywhere" ).
3. When you first open the link, you will be prompted to run an Activ=
e-X plug-in. You'll need to install this for the program to work properly.
4. The username is mrhs and there is no password (leave it blank).
5. At this point in the season, the swifts are now leaving the roost =
quite early (between 5 am and 6 am) and returning anywhere between 8 pm and=
9:15pm at this particular roost. These times will change with weather cond=
itions, and as the season progresses.
You should be able to view the live feed from our two wireless cameras (cha=
nnel 1 is pointed skyward and has some connection issues, so that screen is=
sometimes blank). Unfortunately, it appears as though the playback feature=
only works if you have the Lorex software installed on your computer. I'm=
investigating whether or not people can just download the software from th=
e Lorex site so that they can look at archived footage. If not, I'll try to=
make some of the better footage available on our Maritimes School SwiftWat=
ch YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCgT-uGpT7VXVqcNlEkE_RQ=
) as time permits.
I noticed that two swifts remained inside the chimney this morning, staying=
side by side for almost the entire time. School staff did check the chimne=
y for evidence of nesting and found nothing, but they were not able to view=
the bottom of the chimney very clearly. It will be interesting to see what=
, if anything, happens over the following months.
