My comments about massive structures, comparable to traditional =
nesting sites, being labor and materials intensive assumed a =
self-regulating design.=20
Taking a different approach, provided the acceptable temperature =
range of a nest is known and electrical power were available, it would =
be a relatively simple matter to design, build and test a temperature =
controlled structure. Is the acceptable temperature range known ?
About 20 years ago I wanted to keep an old DOS-based computer in the =
field from late summer to late fall. Drawing on memory, a low wattage =
heater (5 W ?) on as needed in the well-insulated instrument shelter was =
sufficient even in very cold weather and passive ventilation =
supplemented by a fan, as needed, provided adequate cooling during fall =
& spring. A short Q-Basic subroutine did the controlling with no =
override.=20
I have been told that applications of this type are not possible =
with Windows-based computers but don't know this for a fact. But if so =
then a simple programmable single channel data logger would do the job.

I certainly don=E2=80=99t mean to discourage anyone=E2=80=99s efforts to =
protect Chimney Swifts! However, I also don=E2=80=99t want to encourage =
the construction of artificial towers at this time, simply because the =
cost of materials and the effort put into building towers likely =
isn=E2=80=99t likely to yield any positive results-- we haven=E2=80=99t =
come up with a design that we know will work in our climate. Better to =
spend that effort locating nests and roosts in existing structures, and =
working to preserve those structures, which are favourable to swifts for =
reasons that we don=E2=80=99t yet know.=20
=20
Knowing where these sites are will also help us study other aspects of =
CHSW ecology=E2=80=94like diet, feeding rates, territory size, etc. =
which would help us address questions about other suspected threats to =
Chimney Swifts---effects of climate change, pesticides and other threats =
that have been discussed in recent papers and articles.
