We have in the past had 20+ owls on this route, = but we were glad to have 5 Barred Owls and 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl that = night. Two of the Barred Owls which called distantly in the 2 = min.initial silent period flew in beside the vehicle while we were doing = up our notes for that stop. We had 9 Wilson's Snipe and 14 American = Woodcock on the route. The latter should explain why were are getting = fewer owls as a lot of the wooded area has been cut creating ideal = Woodcock habitat. It had clouded over after we started the route but = the conditions were still ideal for a count. Maybe because of the cloud = cover, the Woodcock started to perform on the last 3 stops after a quiet = period in the middle stops. Peepers were heard at every stop, but we = did not hear any Wood Frogs.=20 Rick Ferguson and I did the Lorne-Sheepherders Junction route ( Pict) on = April 20. Here we had 6 Barred Owls and 2 Great Horned Owls. Another 2 = BARR came to the vehicle and called while we were making notes, but we = did not hear them in the survey period so were not countable!. Only 3 = Snipe and 3 Woodcock this route. We had Peepers and Wood Frogs at every = stop. I think I mentioned our first route in an earlier email but will report = again since only 1 Great Horned Owl was all we, (Rick and I), heard on = the Sunnybrae( Pict)-Caledonia( Guys) on April 14. Wood Frogs were on = Stops 1,3,4,5,6, 7, 8, and 10. Peepers were only on stops 5, 6, 7, and = 10. ( temp +4C-+1C). A Woodcock on the first stop was the only one for = the route, but I think it or it's descendants have been in the location = for 10+ years we have been doing this count. This route has very few = trees now as many of the trees planted after the Trafalgar fire in the = late 70's have been removed.=20 cheers Ken ------=_NextPart_000_0190_01CD2B7A.8DDCE180 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.19222"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton = NS<BR>B0K=20 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>On Thurs May 3, Charlie Kendell and I = ran the=20 <STRONG>Tony Mills Owl route</STRONG> (western Pictou Co.).
