Joe Nocera and his colleagues' paper "Historical pesticide applications coincided with an altered diet of aerially foraging insectivorous chimney swifts" has provided me with such an opportunity. Despite the banning of DDT forty years ago bird populations are still suffering the after-effects of this pesticide. And now, new threats in the form of climate change confront them. Despite this, the federal government appears not to have learned from environmental history. Rather than increasing resources devoted to this area of vital concern, it is instead scaling them back. Will we have to face a silent future after all? Will no birds sing in a future spring?
