I was in the Black River Lake area Friday & today. Today I was able to
photograph male Hooded Mergansers for the first time. The photos don't
have the detail to be cropped but the linked photo does speak to this
duck's breeding season habitat.

Two days ago I was able to photograph a male Pileated Woodpecker as he
worked. The first photo is the best.

I had an encounter with a beaver that was very curious but not too
happy with me. He slapped his tail 3 times but came closer & closer.

I was trying to locate a Ruffed Grouse that was drumming so I was
barely moving, making no noise on a damp day. All of a sudden I was
hearing quiet "wuffing" between 2 animals moving thru the woods about
100 m away. The 2 animals would not have been within sight of each
other. One was directly downhill from me while the other was to the
right. After they were gone I moved about 100 m along the trail,
around a significant curve. There was a big, fresh pile of coyote poop
on the trail. It still radiated obvious heat to my hand held just
above it. The animals were coyotes.
