Hi John & All, Apr 22, 2012
Further to my e-mail of Apr 4, and having read the report in more =
detail, I agree that finding why some mink farms don't cause P pollution =
is the key question. The nature of soil underlying and downslope from =
mink operations could be involved in addition to use of superphosphate =
and procedures for storage/composting/disposal of wastes. But whatever =
causes this difference, full cooperation of the mink farmers will be =
needed.

P removal from waterways would be an interesting undertaking (e.g. =
using rafts of Willow that are harvested at intervals & removed) but why =
bother because P is eventually captured by components already in the =
system. Therefore cutting off the sources would soon lead to cleansing.

lakes

Hi All, Apr 4, 2012
I just skimmed through the Brylinsky report and, from the passages I =
hit, several points stand out.

Normally phosphate is immobile in soil until the soil colloids =
become supersaturated, and this takes a lot of P, so it has seemed =
strange all along that P was somehow reaching waterways.

The absence of real soil may be a key aspect because phosphate would =
pass over/through a bog or swamp like bran through a loose goose. And =
some of these drainage ways are very wet. Whether swamp/bog drainage =
ways and hi P input points register is another matter.

Superphosphate readily reacts with free ammonia to form diammonium =
phosphate (DAP) which, in P terms, is about 20 times as soluble as =
superphos. I would expect DAP to be the mobile form. This agrees with =
Appendix 1 where samples high in P are also high in NH4.

Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville

John's remarks about the superphosphate may have come from the article =
of Apr. 2/12 on the cbc.ca/news/ CBC News Web site, and/or possibly =
from the Yarmouth newspaper, The Vanguard? The two articles I read =
(incl. the Herald of Apr. 3) indicate that the N.S. Dept. of Environment =
is working on the draft regulations for fur farms and working to make =
them come into effect rather than remain as "drafts". Both of the =
reports for N.S. Environment were done by Mike Brylinsky of the Acadia =
Centre for Estuarine Research at Acadia Univ. The reports are available =
on line at gov.ns.ca/environment/ by searching under "mink", and the =
most recent report is dated Feb. 2012 (based on monitoring in 2009, =
2010, & 2011.=20

Hmm... The logistics sound horrendous. Guess the cattails are =
doing some
of that , but not enough.

Interesting: Looks as if only some farms are causing a problem, and =
use of
superphosphate has been implicated. It would be good to know why =
certain
farms are associated with increases in nutrient level in nearby =
waterways
    and others are not. =20

I notice in today's Chr. Hrld. that mink farming has once again =
been
linked to phosphate pollution of waterways.

I may be repeating myself, not sure, but has thought been given =
