Hi All=2C
Looks like the spring cleaning of my Tree Swallow boxes is paying off. =
This afternoon I thought I saw swallows checking out a box but when I looke=
d through the bins it turned out to be a pair of Eastern Bluebirds. All aft=
ernoon they have been feeding on insects or grubs on the ground and checkin=
g out different swallow boxes (at least ten) to see if one might prove to b=
e a good home.=20
It is very very early to have breeding Bluebirds this far north but I d=
id have a successful breeding pair here in June/July of 2002 so who knows. =
The male is singing and both seem to be in pre breeding form.
The only frustration is that while I had confirmed breeding bluebirds i=
n 2002 and this could be atlassed as probably breeding bluebirds during the=
five years of atlasing I didn't see even a single bird at these boxes.
Interestingly there are a pair of Kestrels that that also are using the=
same nest boxes as perches to hunt from. The Bluebirds don't seem to have =
a problem with sharing the nest box perches with the Kestrels.
I have a bit of video and a few photos that are good enough for ID but=
I hope to get better shots if the birds hang around. All the best.=20
