APRIL 20, 2012 - Canning Aboiteau: 160+ Canada geese.

On my way south from Canning, just south of the Canard River along =20
Hwy. 358, a large stick nest in small deciduous trees that I had not =20
noticed before held an incubating red-tailed hawk (pretty sure it's a =20=

hawk, red-tailed is presumed).

Bob Thexton had a northern parula warbler in Bridgewater.

Today on CBC's "Maritime Noon" with Bob Bancroft answering wildlife-=20
related questions (phone-in & other), Karen McKendry reported that =20
recently she found, collected, and identified a red admiral butterfly =20=

that was road-killed in Halifax. She wondered if it had overwintered =20=

in Nova Scotia, but probably it was part of that massive influx of =20
migrants from New England, about which John Klymko alerted all of us =20
just 4-5 days ago. After that there were lots of reports of rapidly =20
flying butterflies, mostly red admirals, all headed northeast =20
rapidly, in New Brunswick with smaller numbers in N.S. Norma Lee =20
MacLeod of Marnoon said she had read of massive numbers of =20
butterflies lately in Ontario.

I Googled cbc.ca/butterfly and found this story of Apr. 19/12:

Thousands of butterflies descend on Ottawa - Technology ... - CBC.ca

Canada have been playing host to hundreds of thousands of butterflies =20=

Tonight on CBC-TV's National News, it was reported that "trout" (lake =20=

trout) not only get very big (30+ kg., 65 lbs.) in Great Bear Lake in =20=

the NWT, but also appear to be evolving rapidly -- i.e., biologists =20
have identified five different forms, with different growth rates and =20=

different diets.

Here's the link to an article on this from the Edmonton Journal:

APRIL 21, 2012 - Yesterday Stan Riggs in Coldbrook reported that two =20
birds were building a nest on his back deck of his house -- he sent =20
some nice photos that showed they were eastern phoebes.

On our neighbourhood walk, we saw 2 pileated woodpeckers along the =20
lower part of Chestnut Ave. One of them was making a feeding hole in =20=

a living-but-over-the-hill deciduous tree. Then the pair flew up =20
into a big tree across the street and, from the wing-flapping I could =20=

see, almost certainly copulated there (too distant to tell for =20
sure). It's hard to tell in such cases whether the copulation was =20
for fertilization or for "cementing the pair-bond".

Our pink-flowering magnolia just opened its flowers over the past two =20=

days, and the same thing is happening now all over town.=
