Hi James & All, Apr 20, 2012
For those pressed for time please skip to the question.

This is an interesting article and it shows one thing clearly; if =
you aim to 'pile it higher and deeper' then it helps to have retaining =
walls and 10 authors.

In Materials & Methods (b), for example, they stick in a wedge of =
results and based on measurement of 137Cs, with a maximum in 1963 at a =
depth of 70 cm, along with deposition start and end dates of `1928 and =
1992 "estimated that approximately 2.2 cm of guano accumulated =
annually."=20

But if 2 Metres accumulated over 64 years is not the average annual =
rate of accumulation 200/64 =3D >3 cm ? And the average between for the =
70 cm between 1963 & 1992 would be 2.4 cm; for the 130 cm between 1928 & =
1963 would be 3,7 cm.

But in any case, near the end of Introduction they postulate a 90% =
decline in Swift population during the period in question; not =
consistent with either a constant rate over the period or an only =
slightly decreased rate over the last 29 years as compared to the =
previous 35.=20

That guano accumulation in their two periods was only slightly =
reduced suggests to me that a decline in the total complement of =
roosting space may be a major cause of the population decline.
   =20
In Materials and Methods (d) they refer to counting "single =
elytra... and bodies with double elytra...". apparently not remembering =
their high school biology to the effect that "elytra" is plural; =
consisting of a left elytron and a right elytron. Did their reviewers =
read any of this Ms ?

QUESTION
Is it consistent with known Chimney Swift feeding habits to assume =
that Beetles and Hemiptera constitute their entire diet ?=20

This seems to be the premise of this study. I suspect they have =
'discovered' that beetle and large Hemiptera exoskeletons persist after =
being swallowed while Lep, Diptera & Hemiptera do not.=20

I am not at all familiar with the biological implications of varying =
ratios of stable isotopes such as 13C/12C and 15N/14N.

for the environment, human health, and wildlife in the pursuit of =
profit. Some would argue that she is directly responsible for the =
establishment of environmental protection agencies around the world. As =
