Thanks for the input and interest everyone (and for the comments on the
photos). 

I just went through my photos and posted several more zoomed in on the
insect in question -- just navigate to the last few images of the gallery
(they are severely cropped so I'm sorry for the image quality):

On the three sessions I photographed this bird it certainly was making a
meal of these.

I likewise do not believe it is lepidopteran. My guess is June Bug, they
will come to the surface when it rains in the same way worms do. this
Kestrel probably just got lucky (and a giant shot of protein)
