I was out on West Long Island Road & East Point, N. Grand Pre, this morning. On the former I saw "the" Northern Mockingbird that has been in residence there since the winter of '09/'10 at least. A local resident stopped to talk to me & she agreed they have been there for about 3 years. She said she regularly has 2 together in her yard & she believes they have nested. The nest was not found. I know Jim reported that Andy Dean had seen Dunlin & Purple Sandpipers at East Point recently. Today, at one hour before high tide there were 31 Dunlin & 14 Purple Sandpipers, together, on the rock dyke that faces directly N towards Blomidon i.e. at the very N point of the dyke, not out on the lower part of East Point. I wouldn't be surprised if these birds will be there at high tide for several more days. If you approach these birds very quietly, slowly, they are quite tolerant. Don't charge directly to the point to look down. They'll fly. The high tides are going to be close to maximum over the next few days, peaking at 15.5 & 15.7 m on Saturday & Sunday. (I believe the max for all of 2012 is 16.2 m). It can be kind of amazing to see the water so close to the top of the dyke. High tide is 13:13, 14:03 & 14:54 Friday thru Sunday. A rather nice Purple Sandpiper: http://rickwhitman.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-April-June-2012/22243788_LGxpGV#!i=1780900903&k=qSdJLBp Rick Whitman
