Eric ------- Forwarded message follows ------- Date sent: Wed, 4 Apr 2012 23:50:49 -0300 Send reply to: Jim Wilson <jgw@NBNET.NB.CA> From: Jim Wilson <jgw@NBNET.NB.CA> Subject: How Many Red-bellied Woodpeckers Still in NB???? To: NATURENB@LISTSERV.UNB.CA [ Double-click this line for list subscription options ] Back in the fall and early winter I recorded as many Red-bellied Woodpecker reports as I could, starting with the first report at Fundy Park on October 16th and carrying through to the end of the Christmas Bird Count Period, on January 5th. I figured that any new reports after that date would likely be birds already here but just wandering about. It also seemed like a nice cutoff point that will allow inclusion of Christmas Bird Count results. My total for that period was 171 reports. Included in that number were 17 birds that were strongly suspected to be visiting more than one property in a given town. So I flagged them as probable "duplicates". Deducting those birds brings the total for different individuals down to 154. Of course it's impossible to say there wasn't more duplication within that number, but by recording males and females and also towns and street addresses as often as possible, I cut down on that possibility. I want to offer my thanks once again to everyone who reported and in many cases put up with me chasing them for specifics on gender or civic addresses, or whether the woodpecker was attending a feeder or not at the time of the sighting. I'm working on a summary of the information but want to wait until I can get the results of the many individual Christmas Bird Counts before pulling it together. Although they won't provide the same level of detail on gender and specific location, Christmas Count information will still be valuable information to include. I know, for example, that we counted 12 Red-bellied Woodpeckers on the Hammond River Count alone. ********************** However, I'd now like to get a sense of how many Red-bellied Woodpeckers have made it through the winter and are still around New Brunswick. Kathy Popma, Yolande LeBlanc and Joan Pearce have sent reports about their birds in recent days and we still have a very vocal female around our property as of this morning. So, if you still have one or more Red-bellied Woodpeckers present as at April 1 or beyond, could you please email and let me know? I'd like to get the following info: 1. Number of birds (if more than one) 2. Gender of the bird 3. Your civic address and town 4. Most recent date seen 5. Is bird coming to a feeder? And, looking ahead a few weeks, surely with so many birds here all winter we'll see some attempts at breeding within the not too distant future. Please keep us all apprised of that and try to get photo evidence - it would be a first nesting for NB.
