APRIL 1, 2012 - Grand Pre bald eagle nests checked: (a) west Long
Island, n. of Leungs' farm-house -- no eagles visible; (b) Long
Island, Evangeline Family Campground, south edge -- no eagles
visible; and (c) Boot Island, off e. end of Long Island -- distant
distorted view with scope (heat waves from Sunny day) indicated an
adult eagle was on the nest (new site at top of tree).

Just west of Grand Pre Hist. Park, I checked the line of tall poplars
along the railroad tracks for nests: toward the west end, there was a
high stick nest that I thought was probably a raven nest, but in the
scope I could see the head of a probable red-tailed hawk, probably
incubating eggs?

In the same area, west and south of that nest, some tall aspen
poplars had open hanging catkins.

At home in early evening, presumably our regular male cardinal showed
up at the feeder. For the past 3-4 days or more, he has shown up
alone, whereas previously most sightings have been of the male and
female together (we no longer have 2 females). Perhaps the female is
already on an early nest?

APRIL 2, 2012 - At noon I checked on the bald eagle nest along the
14th hole fairway on KenWo Golf Course in New Minas, but still no
sign of any eagles there.

I checked some crocuses at the Wolfville Post Office twice today for
any honey bee activity, but I saw none -- temperature high today was
about 7-8 C. About a month ago when we had extremely warm
temperatures for a few days, I missed seeing honey bees, although I
recall a few reports of just a few being active.

APRIL 3, 2012 - Stella's Pond nw. of New Minas: besides a few pairs
of mallards and black ducks, there was a large brown-and-white
domestic goose on the Ducks Unlimited island; also on the island was
a Canada goose possibly on a nest? but not hidden at all, and another
Canada goose was nearby in the water (the male mate?). The same
domestic goose has been also seen in Miner's Marsh in Kentville;
presumably this probably-flightless rotund goose just swims along the
river from pond to pond?

Gesner's Pond: no birds seen at all.

Kidston's Pond (Upper Church St.): 8 ring-necked ducks (6m,2f).

Upper Church St. Dog Groomer's property: red-tailed hawk is probably
incubating in the nest at the top of a pine close to the house and
not far from the street.

Canard Pond: a single female or imm. common merganser, 2 hooded
mergansers (m,f pr), 1 drake gadwall, 3 Am. wigeons (1 m,f pr + 1m),
4 n. pintails (2 m,f prs), 12+ green-winged teals (mostly males),
plus lots of mainly great black-backed gulls.

Elsewhere a tractor plowing a field was closely followed by about 200
herring gulls.

Canning Aboiteau: about 300+ Canada geese just downstream of the
aboiteau.

Saxon St. Pond: no birds at all.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
