Hi All=0ABeing a lovely day, a friend and I took the canoe for a few hours =
paddle.=0AWe went to a meadow with a stream or a river whichever you like =
=A0which=0Awanders through a flood plain with red maples and other hardwood=
trees.=0AEvery few years a maple falls in the river or a part of one and t=
he branches=0Acollect whatever is drifting in the current. This blocks the =
current forcing it=0Aagainst the far bank digging a new channel. The part u=
nder the tree fills in with sand=0Aand pretty soon more red maples start th=
ere. An interesting thing a river.=0AWe saw about 30 - 40 Black Ducks and M=
allards in mixed flock. about 50 % each.=0AAll paired with a=A0few single m=
ales - most females don't seem to be nesting yet. We did flush=0Aa female m=
allard from a group of bushes on the bank but didn't search for a nest.=0AT=
here was also a pair of green winged teal and another pair I took to be woo=
d ducks.=0AThey flushed wild and flew into the trees. There was lots of sto=
neflies so perhaps=0Athat was the attraction.=0Awe saw 2 raptors one no id =
- it was smaller than a Red Tail but about the same profile.=0AThe other wa=
s a Harrier. It was flying up in the air and then gliding down to tree leve=
l. One=0Aof its glides it came quite close so I was sure what it was. First=
for me this year.=0AWhen we took the canoe out of the water, the bottom ha=
d a good number of small shrimps on it.=0AAbout 2 mm in length I would esti=
mate. They were quite lively. Somewhat like scuds but I have never=0Aseen t=
hem before and neither had my friend except much larger ones in Western Can=
ada.=0AGood duck food!=0AHave a nice spring=0APaul=0A
