All: As Eric Mills alerted earlier today, he, Dave Currie and I were gratified with great looks at this bird at the Ruff's feeder in rather wintry Yarmouth (fresh snow). Both Dave and I obtained many images, more than good enough to depict this very rare bird. I have placed two photos - one by Dave and one by me - on NS-RBA Photos. The dim light and white backgrounds were problems, and I have corrected somewhat for that. Astonishingly, this appears to be the fifth (obne specimen, two photographed) in Nova Scotia. As far as I know there has been one in nearby Maine, but none elsewhere in northeast U.S.A. or in Canada. The photos may be good enough to identify the subspecies; the bright bluish rump suggests that it might be of the more westerly (but migratory?) subspecies loyei, as was one found dead in Dartmouth a few years ago (specimen in NS Mseum Natural History). Any comments on this distinction welcome. Cheers, Ian Ian McLaren
