MARCH 22, 2012 - Sunny and VERY WARM today, up to 27 C.!!

Pat Chalmers found ELM in bloom yesterday in Halifax -- what species
of elm?. So today I checked the young American? elm that I watch
every year at the edge of the Acadia Arena parking lot; its flower
buds are quite swollen but not open yet. Very nearby are two planted
silver maples and a red maple that I also monitor every Spring: the
red maple has quite swollen flower-buds, but the female silver maples
have open crimson flowers/catkins.

I still haven't seen coltsfoot (maybe later today?) in bloom (see
below), but crocuses and snow-drops are popping up everywhere in
Wolfville. And of course the planted varieties of witch-hazel
continue to bloom in Wolfville's Clock Park.

In mid-afternoon I checked some other sites for wild flowers, and the
best site was the northeast end of Oak Avenue in Wolfville (ne. of
Blomidon Inn): there were about 50 open flower-heads of coltsfoot,
plus some just-open Daphne flowers (one of "Jean Timpa's bushes"),
and some willow sp. "pussies" (no open flowers yet). Two other sites
had just a few flower-heads of coltsfoot.

In late afternoon, when my car was registering 27 C.!!, I prowled
around in the shady, cooler, but sweaty Kentville Ravine, trying to
find the bald eagle nest that James Churchill found several days
ago. But I had no luck, despite James' excellent directions and
map. I'm pitiful! I did see an adult bald eagle flying, probably
from the area of the nest I couldn't find.

In the Ravine, a n. flicker was calling, and I was very happy to hear
a singing winter wren. And several robins were in an orchard on top
beside the edge of the Ravine.

Stella's Pond (n. of New Minas, by river on Middle Dyke Rd.), held 4
Canada geese, a male mallard, and 3 black ducks. Nothing but a song
sparrow at the Port Williams sewage ponds.

MARCH 23, 2012 - Sunny again but much cooler (13 C. in car) and very
windy-cool from the north.

I should have looked yesterday (very hot for two days), but at
Lockhart & Ryan Park in New Minas, my annually early Mayflowers
showed no flowers and not even any swollen flower-buds.

Stella's Pond still has 2 pairs of Canada geese and a few mallards
and black ducks, but now there is a big, fat, brown and white
domestic goose too.

Eagle Landing bald eagle nest, ne. of Kentville: top of adult eagle's
head just visible in nest cup.

Gesner's Pond: 2 pairs of Canada geese, pond totally open.

Kidston's Pond, Upper Church Street: 1 pair of Canada geese, a m/f pr
of mallards, and 2 male ring-necked ducks.

Van Nostrand's Pond, Starr's Point, the newer DUC pond: no water
birds at all, but alder catkins/flowers were all open on one small
tree at the pond edge.

Bald eagle nest at Seaview Poultry Farm, Starr's Point: still no
adult eagles visible there.

MARCH 24, 2012 - Andy Dean found and photographed a gray-phase GRAY
SQUIRREL in the Kentville Ravine.

MARCH 25, 2012 - Pat & I on our neighbourhood walk saw blooming
small "bluebells" or Scillas, plus crocuses of course, and even a
couple of blooming daffodills already, plus a blooming heath plant
(which I erroneously called "heather" last year and got chastised for)
(bad grammar!).

Cecil Pulsifer found and photographed a mixed flock of shorebirds
somewhere on Long Island, North Grand Pre: in his photos I counted/
guessed about 15 dunlins and 7 purple sandpipers -- I have asked
Cecil how many there were, so these numbers are to be confirmed.

MARCH 26, 2012 - The young American elm at the edge of the Acadia
Arena parking lot is now in bloom, as is a quite large still-standing
and apparently healthy? American elm on the Acadia campus (kitty-
corner from the old bookstore bldg. and just sw. of Denton Hall
(music bldg.).

And now a red maple by the Arena parking lot has flower buds just
opening.

The Irving Botanical Gardens are now open again, and Mayflower flower-
buds are visible in some places.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
