--Apple-Mail-2--888588826 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed MARCH 14, 2012 - At home our cardinals seem to have deserted us, for the past 10 days or more. Perhaps they are nesting now already?? Back at the Canning Aboiteau, in the river with black ducks and mallards were an interesting group of 6 mergansers: 5 common mergansers (2m,3f) with a lovely and active male hooded merganser. The hoodie obviously had lots of testosterone in his system, and he was flashing his white "hood" (opening and closing it) with head bobs and approaching male c. mergansers aggressively and at least one female c. merganser with courting moves -- the hoodie needs to find a conspecific female! Only about 30++ Canada geese were in and over the fields along the Habitant River there. Several flying flocks of up to 30 birds were seen over a couple of hours. Regarding bald eagles and pseudo-incubation, I checked two nests quickly on this raw, cold, rainy afternoon. No eagle was on the nest at Noggins Farm at Greenwich, but the apparently really incubating adult eagle was sitting deeply in the nest east of Wolfville, southeast of the Eye Road intersection with Hwy. 1. If the Noggins pair of eagles nest this year, this will almost certainly be their first nest attempt as a pair (nothing produced there in 2010 and 2011); thus I would expect them to be later in starting than more established eagle pairs.
