It is always a treat to have "our" 1 or 2 Pileated Woodpeckers visit.
Today was especially interesting & humourous

It was the male's turn this morning. We have three log suet feeders.
When he arrived two of them were occupied by Hairys & Downies. He has
never appeared happy with the location of the third one but
nevertheless he went through his routine of going up & down the tree
trunk before deciding how to approach the log. By the time he
finished another Downy flew in & started to feed at his log. This
was definitely annoying so he looked around for something else. He
saw one of the bird cakes on the clothesline so he decided that was
his only chance. This is one of my favourite sights as his large body
looks weird on the small cake. He ate a bit & then flew off without
dining on any of the suet which he craved.

He has never realized he can have any feeder he wishes. Size matters!!

Angus
