*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
*
*Some events in the changing sky for March 4-10

*It's a longer sky report again this week, with a lot to check out on clear
nights.

On Thursday, March 8, the *MOON *will go into its full phase, meaning that
it will rise at sunset and set at dawn, to have it appear all night and
provide moonlit nights. Expect higher high tides and lower low tides.

This is the time of year when *SIRIUS*, the brightest star after the Sun,
shines due south at nightfall. To the upper left of it by two fists at
arm's length, is *PROCYON*. The same distance to the upper right of Sirius
is *BETELGEUSE*. These three stars form the bright, colourful Winter
Triangle.

The *BIG DIPPER* [Grand Ours] glitters high in the northeast these
evenings, standing on its handle. The two stars forming the front of the
dipper's bowl, currently at the top, are the pointers and they point at *
POLARIS*, the North Star, currently to their left. If you follow the curve
of the dipper's handle out and around by a little more than a dipper
length you'll arc to the star *ARCTURUS*, now rising in the east. If you
follow the pointers backwards, the opposite way you'll land in the
constellation *LEO*. Draw a line diagonally across the dipper's bowl, from
where the handle is attached, and continue on you'll go to *GEMINI*.

Saturday night, March 10, *Daylight Savings Time* begins at 2 a.m., Sunday
morning.

On Saturday, Mar. 3, the *SUN *[Soleil] rose at 6:57 a.m. and will set at
6:14 p.m. On Saturday, Mar. 10, it will rise at 6:44 a.m. and set at 6:23
p.m. The time change will be reflected in sunrise and sunset times after
March 10.*

**This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure], about magnitude -0.8, is having its best apparition
of 2012. As the after-glow of sunset fades in the west, look for Mercury
far below and perhaps a bit to the right of Venus and Jupiter. Use
binoculars.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] and *JUPITER*, at magnitude -4.3 and -2.2, respectively,
are the two bright "Evening Stars" shining in the southwest to west during
and after dusk. Venus is the brighter, lower one. Watch Jupiter closing in
on it by one degree every day. The gap between them narrows from 10 degrees
to just 4 degrees this week. These are the two brightest celestial objects
after the Sun and the Moon.

*MARS*, about magnitude -1.2, shines rises bright fire-orange low in the
east during twilight and dominates the eastern sky after dark. Mars shines
highest in the south around 1 a.m.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.4, shines in the east around 10 p.m.
and shines highest in the south around 4 a.m. Saturn's rings are tilted 15
degrees from our line of sight, the most open the rings have appeared since
2007; They can be easily seen with a birding scope on clear nights.
