All Nova Scotian naturalists are likely to be concerned about a development that may be about to take place at Northern (North ) Point on Brier Island, one of the premier migration stopovers for migrating land birds in spring and fall. As reported in the Digby Courier of February 19 (see the Business section), Fundy Tidal Power, Inc., which is planning to install tidal turbines in Grand Passage between Westport and Brier Island, is proposing to "develop" a "Brier Island Centre" involving Fundy Tidal's corporate headquarters, plus office and work space "to be shared with community, industry, academic and government stakeholders", also "research and laboratory space, equipment storage, maintenance and repair, bunkhouses and housekeeping cabins, a cafeteria or restaurant, interactive displays, gift shop as well as 'power and interconnection building'." Tidal power from Grand Passage is likely to be environmentally benign (see Fundy Tidal's website at www.fundytidal.com), but the development at Northern Point will certainly not be benign. In short, it has the potential to destroy the environment used by hundred of thousands of migrant birds, essential to their survival, and to irremedially change one of the islands scarce and very valuable habitats. The area likely to be affected takes in all the land not occupied by the light station from the tip of the point as far south as the Acadia land (on which Lance Laviolette's banding operation takes place) and an unknown area to the southwest I would like to ask every one concerned about the disastrous potential of Fundy Tidal's development at Northern to contact all of the following to express your concern: Municipal councillor David Tudor <dtudor@municipality.digby.ns.ca Digby Municipality Warden Linda Gregory <lgregory@municipality.digby.ns.ca President of Fundy Tidal Power, Inc., Dana Morin <fundy@fundytidal.com And if there are others who should weigh in on this very worrying proposal or be contacted, please let me know.
