Bernard Forsythe & I went to Cherry Hill Beach today to give his winter list for this year a final boost. We raised it to an all time record of 126 today. We were there on a falling tide until about 2 hours before low tide. The tidal flat was covered & there were no shorebirds at first. At the extreme tip, a rocky point, we found 1 Purple Sandpiper. We later found one more at the rocky point just off the parking area. We found 3 Black-bellied Plovers and 2 Ruddy Turnstones on the main tidal flat at the NW end. Back on the ocean-facing beach, about in the middle, we found 6 Sanderlings. There were 2 Northern Harriers-- 1 beautiful juvenile & 1 male. At the tidal flats a nonbreeding adult Bonaparte's Gull flew past us several times. We could see the small, true black bill, the well-defined ear spot, and the markedly small size compared to a Ring-billed Gull which was, conveniently, chasing it. Canada Geese, Ducks, Common Loons & Horned Grebes Green Bay to Cherry Hill were as expected. I photographed all 4 species of shorebirds just because it's Feb. 27th. I had better photos of all last fall, frankly. http://rickwhitman.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-January-March-2012/20950511_VD8zMC#!i=1728226821&k=xk3ddhQ Rick Whitman
