Around 7:30 this morning, I was off to check on and feed the Gallinule (& the ducks, mainly, just to divert their attention) and the Am. Coot. Both were present and looked great, active, wary, & alert. Checked to see if the shield on the beak of the Gallinule might be starting to turn red. Not sure but the colour looks to be lightening on the area of the shield that is between its eyes. Today's offering for the Gallinule was chopped salad greens, canned salmon, chopped smelts, crumbled High Energy suet block & corn meal. It certainly knows where the food is and seemed to be feeding well. The ice is receding throughout the reedy area around the drainage ditch resulting in more areas for the Gallinule to swim & hide. The offerings to the Am. Coot was mixed seed which it appears to prefer. I had been taking a suet block for it too but the Gulls and Crows would just come in and fly off with it. Thankfully, (so far, as there is still more winter to come!) here in HRM anyway, it has been mild, however, I truly believe that, thanks to the continuous generosity of the kind folks (& even those who could only do it once or twice) who have been supplementing the diets of both the Coot & especially, the Gallinule, that it has made the difference between their survival or not. Am curious, though, if both these birds will eventually leave as Spring approaches, and if so, earlier or later in the season? Sincerely, Gayle MacLean Dartmouth
