I can't resist adding a bit to this subject. Most of you know that=20=20
ospreys can be confused with other birds only with difficulty. But=20=20
for those who are relatively unfamiliar with birds of prey and their=20=20
field marks, be aware that one of the confusing immature plumages of=20=20
the bald eagle shows head markings very much like the osprey, with=20=20
the head being partly whitish with a prominent dark marking through=20=20
the eye. An immature bald eagle is otherwise very different from an=20=20
osprey, whether perched or in flight. Check out the distinctive=20=20
pattern under the wings of the osprey in flight. This is why winter=20=20
sightings of osprey anywhere in Nova Scotia are a bit questionable=20=20
without corroborating details being given. Most ospreys are long-=20
distance migrants that are far south of here from late fall until=20=20
late March or later in Spring.
