--Apple-Mail-2-198130713 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed FEB. 5 (SUNDAY), 2012 - Last day of 21st Annual Eagle Watch at Sheffield Mills -- Continuing very wintry and cold conditions, temperatures -10 to -8 C. with a cold wind from northwest, plus complete snow cover (but very shallow). And a pretty good day for our attempt at the Annual Cyril K. Coldwell Eagles and Raptors Count for Eastern King's County. One bonus today was that the dykeland roads were all or mostly driveable by the various surveyors, so our coverage was perhaps better than on many previous counts. We had a pretty good day re weather and visibility for our annual count named above. Here are our preliminary results from the efforts of about 32 observers in 16-17 field parties for just one hour from 10 to 11 a.m. (to minimize double-counting of individual eagles and other species): 477 total bald eagles (269 adults, 189 immatures, 19 of unknown ages) (ratio of adult:immature for aged eagles was 59%:41%) 54 red-tailed hawks 3 rough-legged hawks 4 northern harriers 1 sharp-shinned hawk 1 merlin 1 Am. kestrel Other interesting sightings: 400 Canada geese; 400 black ducks; 25 mallards; 65+ Bohemian waxwings, 32 cedar waxwings, 34 horned larks, 90+20+1 snow buntings, 1 singing cardinal! Best general areas for eagles yesterday were: 131 eagles west & north from Port Williams; 170 n. & s. from Grand Pre; 69 in Sheffield Mills area; 34 east of Avonport. One possibly problematic and inflationary sighting was of a sudden flurry of activity of 30+ eagles at the Haliburtton farm east of Avonport at about 10:20 a.m., and the observers didn't notice where those eagles may have come in from. The Avonport area is the point of convergence of three different field parties -- e. g. Gaspereau Valley and southeast of Grand Pre. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. --Apple-Mail-2-198130713 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; "><font face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: = 12.0px Helvetica"><b>FEB. 5 (SUNDAY), 2012 - Last day of 21st Annual = Eagle Watch at Sheffield Mills</b> -- Continuing very wintry and cold = conditions, temperatures -10 to -8 C. with a cold wind from northwest, = plus complete snow cover (but very shallow).
