JAN. 26, 2012 - Port Williams sewage ponds again at about 1:30 p.m.
This time I approached the ponds stealthily, parking below the
building then skulking up the bank and using the building as a
shield, so that any goldeneyes would not immediately flush off the
north pond. It worked: I think there were 7 goldeneyes, 3 females
and 4 males. Males were busy courting, and all 7 birds were busily
diving, thus counting them was a challenge. The males and 2 females
were all common goldeneyes, but, as Richard said earlier, the 3rd
female had an all-orange beak. Thus she was very probably a Barrow's
goldeneye, although perhaps not a pure one. The head-shape on this
female was a bit different also from the two female commons (longer?
from front to back).

I didn't see any gulls there, and the mallards were not even scanned
this time.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
