--Apple-Mail-4--1047814453 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed JAN. 22, 2012 - At 2 p.m. Jean Leung called to report 5 peregrine falcons all at once behind her home plus the two bald eagles that are trying to nest there again + ravens & crows -- on West Long Island, nw. of Grand Pre. I drove out to Northwest Grand Pre 2 hours after Jean's message above, but saw no peregrine falcons. Well north of Jean's house and the road, in a line of mixed trees well east of the eagle nest, was an active and perched group of about 8 bald eagles or more of mixed ages from adults to immatures. (These trees are distant from the road and will require scoping when we try our annual count of eagles and other raptors, probably on Feb. 5 for our first attempt.) Then I stopped for a while at the feeders of Sheila & Earl Young, well-known bird-carvers who live south of Grand Pre Hist. Park. I watched there for perhaps 15 minutes, with very little activity from a couple of chickadees. At 4:30 p.m. I was startled by a very large, long-winged bird that cruised just over my car and landed in front of me on a low bare branch between the feeders and the road. It was a BARRED OWL, and it sat their unmoving and probably hunting for small mammals attracted to the Youngs' feeders. As soon as the owl arrived, an entourage of songbirds also arrived in the top of the tree and were agitated by the owl -- about 10+ robins and 2 starlings. These birds left after a while, but the owl continued to sit in one place. It was obvious that the feeder-bird activity was over, so I slowly drove through the driveway to get to the road, and the owl never reacted to me at all. I left it there, still apparently hunting. I will have to ask the Youngs whether or not they are still seeing a red-bellied woodpecker there. ----------------------------- In Wolfville our single brown-plumaged purple finch is still at our feeders, and we saw about 10+ robins in our yard this morning.
