January 20, 2011 Hi Folks, Here is an update on the Common Gallinule [Vogel] and American Coot [Crazy Asa] at Red Bridge Pond in Dartmouth: I visited Red Bridge pond on Wednesday afternoon and again yesterday to look for the Vogel and Crazy. I am happy to report that both seem to be doing very well. The Gallinule especially is very actively feeding and swimming around at the storm drain outfall near the daycare center. On Wednesday the birds were accompanied by only a couple of Mallards while they fed amongst the reeds and rushes. It was quite warm and there was more open water than previously. They were much more interested in feeding in the reeds as opposed to the sand bank but there was not much evidence of provided food on the sandbank. Yesterday, Thursday, it was very much colder and there was less open water but they were both very acively swimming and feeding from the water and the reeds. They had 52 Mallards for company this day and it was quite crowded in the "pond". Again, there was no sign of any provided food on the sandbank and the birds were in the water most of the 45 minutes that I was there. For those who may be interested, I added some pictures taken Wednesday and Thursday to my gallery at: http://scranlocker.smugmug.com/Nature/Nature-2012/20920971_TjK84m Paul Murray Dartmouth
