Hi Tuma,
I thoroughly enjoyed the Native story about the heroic and dedicated Militaw the Hummingbird. But, somehow, the narrative seems to end in the middle of the plot. Was Militaw successful in stopping the raging forest fire? Did his fellow animals join him in fighting the forest fire? I am not totally sure what the lesson is here. With many thanks,
   Dusan Soudek

> Hi Everyone:

After reading some posts regarding the attempts to help "Vogel" the Common Gallinule, I was reminded of a story that was told to me by my parents.  It may be a Mi'kmaq story or Cree story but it is a native story. It is about a forest fire that is happening and all of the animals were fleeing the danger.  The bear, the deer, the racoons, the insects-everyone was running away to safety.  The birds were also flying out of the forest fleeing the raging fire.

Militaw-the Hummingbird was frantically dipping its beak into a brook and taking a drop of water back to the forest to try and put out the fire.  Many watched Militaw do this over and over again, frantically transporting one drop of water to try to put out the fire.  All the other animals yelled at Militaw to stop; that her efforts were too small and it would not be able to put out the huge fire.  Militaw stopped briefly and said to the other animals "I'm doing what I can!"

Some folks can only feed the birds.  Some can educate others about the use of lead in bullets and sinkers and how this affects the Eagles. Some can help by lobbing politicians. Others can donate money or support whatever way they can.  Do what you can to help.
