Hi Everyone:=0A=0AThe attempt to rescue the Common Gallinule did not go as =
well as hoped. =A0Despite using a kayak and trying to corral the bird towar=
ds the shore, the Gallinule eluded capture. =A0The ice was too thin to walk=
 on so corralling was difficult. =A0Hope and Hans both agreed that the best=
 thing to do for now is to continue to feed it and wait =A0for the ice to f=
reeze up further thus bringing the Gallinule closer to the shore. =A0Over t=
he next couple days we shall be watching the ice freeze up. =A0There is a p=
ipe that is keeping part of the pond slightly open and this is forcing the =
Gallinule towards closer to shore. =A0Thus when the ice freezes up this wil=
l be the only available open water and the Gallinule will be easier to capt=
ure.=0A=0AThe plan is for folks to keep an eye on it-keep feeding it leafy =
greens, some proteins like chopped up fish (smelts), seeds, cat food and ev=
en chopped up hard boiled eggs. =A0You can leave this at the sandbar by the=
 Daycare centre because that is where the gallinule was this morning. =A0I =
left some baby romaine lettuce with chopped up smelts and sunflower seeds t=
oday. =A0Later on the Mallards had a feast on the sunflower seeds.=0A=0AWe =
shall keep trying to overwinter it and hopefully to be released near the Am=
herst where there are reports of other birds summering or even nesting ther=
e.=0A=0AWish us luck=0A=0ATuma Young=0A
