hi folks,

We had a male RED-BELLIED woodpecker at our suet feeder this afternoon from
about 1:15 to 1:45 (28 forest Hill Rd., Kentville, NS)
I got some video of this guy and will post a link later today - amazing
long tongue!

After this, I observed him "squeaking" for half an hour scaling oak and
beech trees and a telephone pole across the road. No sign of a female.
He held his own against some blue jays (was not flushed by a couple of blue
jays that approached him), and also once checked out a cavity on one of the
upper branches of an oak.

This location is about 500 m S from Richard Stern's observation on 17
December (Miner's Marsh) and about 1100 m W of the male I observed on
Melbourne Ave. yesterday 6 Jan .
Difficult to tell whether these observations represent 1,2 or 3 individuals
- 1100 m falls around the upper end of a winter range size for these guys
(based on some reported estimates).

Cheers,
James.
