On Sunday, Jan. 1, the *MOON *[Lune] goes into its first-quarter phase, which means that it will rise at noon and set at midnight This week look for the *Quadrantid *meteor shower. This should be a fine year for one of the best but least observed annual meteor showers. The Quadrantids should be most active in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 4. On Saturday, Dec. 31, the *SUN *[Soleil] rose at 8:02 a.m. and sets at 4:43 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 7, the SUN [Soleil] will rise at 8:01 a.m. and set at 4:50 p.m. *This Week's Planet Roundup * *MERCURY *[Mercure], at magnitude -0.4, appears lower in the dawn every morning, about 45 minutes before sunrise. Look for it low above the southeast horizon. Don't confuse it with twinkling *Antares*, which is moving ever farther to the upper right of Mercury. *VENUS *[V=E9nus] at magnitude -4.0, is the brilliant "Evening Star" shinin= g in the southwest during and after twilight. It will continue to move a little higher every week, all winter. *MARS*, at magnitude +0.2, rises in the east around 11 p.m. It's brightening rapidly now, week to week, as it approaches the earth. It shines highest in the south around 5 a.m. *JUPITER*, at magnitude -2.6, shines very high in the southeast at twilight, due south after nightfall. It moves lower in the southwest later at night, and sets in the west around 3 a.m. *SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.7, rises in the east around 2 a.m. and is high in the south at dawn. --=20 Blake Maybank <bmaybank@gmail.com> White's Lake, Nova Scotia My Blog: *CSI: Life* <http://blakemaybank.com/> Organiser, *Maritimes Nature Travel Club* <http://tinyurl.com/naturetravel> ** <http://tinyurl.com/naturetravel>** Author, "*Birding Sites of Nova Scotia* <http://tinyurl.com/birdingns> --20cf301b69a755850a04b57aaabc Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <font size=3D"4">From the <font color=3D"#0000FF" size=3D"= 4">Nature Moncton Info Line<font size=3D"4">, courtesy of Nelson Poirier:

<font color=3D"#0000FF" size=3D"5">** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
=A0
<font color=3D"#0000FF" size=3D"5">Some events in the changing sky for J= an 01-07
<font size=3D"4">
<font size=3D"4">Just af= ter midnight, on New Year's Eve, tonight, Saturday, if skies are=20 clear, stand outside to see <b style=3D"color:rgb(51,102,255)">SIRIUS s= hining at its highest due south, a=20 preview of where it will be at dusk when winter nears its end.

On Sunday, Jan. 1, the <b style=3D"color:rgb(51,102,255)">MOON [Lune] g= oes into its first-quarter phase, which means that it will rise at noon and= set at midnight

This week look for the <b style=3D"color:rgb(51,102,255)">Quadrantid me= teor shower.
