We noted 2 Harp Seals one on mud on the inner bay by the east corner of the causeway which looked sick and another travelling down the middle of the causeway which seemed healthy and was gone when we left. I don't think I have noted harp Seals myself on Big I. before. We noted 35 species of birds- most unseasonable was a Northern Parula which Charlie was able to get a documentary photo. This was found near the Mason driveways on the west end of the island. We also saw an Orange-crowned Warbler with a flock of Goldfinches just east of Wharf Rd. An adult Black-headed Gull was hunting the salt ponds in the big salt marsh. There were 2 male Northern Pintail in the cove by the wharf. I was able to get a better look at the Eider flock I saw the day before and the count was ~ 100 birds. I was not in a position last night to see the whole flock at Kings Head on the other side of Merigomish Hbr. There was a single Black-bellied Plover and 2 Sanderlings at the west end of the island. Below is my Ebird submission cheers ken Big Island, Pictou, CA-NS 4-Dec-2011 8:40 AM - 2:30 PM Protocol: Traveling 15.0 kilometer(s) Comments: moderate east-NE winds , tide low and rising , overcast 3C , 35 species Canada Goose 400 American Black Duck 95 Northern Pintail 2 Green-winged Teal 6 Greater Scaup 400 Common Eider 100 Surf Scoter 6 White-winged Scoter 6 Common Goldeneye 71 Common Merganser 18 Red-breasted Merganser 60 Common Loon 1 Horned Grebe 1 Bald Eagle 7 Black-bellied Plover 1 Sanderling 2 Bonaparte's Gull 52 Black-headed Gull 1 Ring-billed Gull 61 Herring Gull 4 Iceland Gull 1 Rock Pigeon 1 Blue Jay 1 American Crow 20 Common Raven 5 Black-capped Chickadee 40 Golden-crowned Kinglet 7 European Starling 120 Snow Bunting 15 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Northern Parula 1 photographed by Charlie Kendell American Tree Sparrow 7 Song Sparrow 9 Dark-eyed Junco 7 American Goldfinch 22 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org/canada) --Boundary_(ID_Br18JlcPAg1hzhWjQWLZ4Q) Content-type: text/html; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" http-equiv=Content-Type> <META name=GENERATOR content="MSHTML 8.00.6001.19154"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton NS<BR>B0K 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Charlie Kendell and I spent a few hours on Big I. today ( Dec. 4) which had moderate-strong east-north winds.
