Nova Scotia Bird Society trip along the Canso Causeway Saturday 05 November. It was cold. There was snow. The wind was strong. The timing of the trip is meant to maximize the chance of seeing gannets. I set the time and many of the participants are now questioning the timing. They have good reason to question. We saw no gannets. I do not recall spending 4 hours along the causeway and area and not seeing gannets in early November. However we did find a few other birds. Highlights were good looks at 3 Red-throated Loons, 2 Rd-necked Grebes, at least two Dovekie, a few hundred Bonaparte’s Gulls, a Bald Eagle consuming a Bonaparte’s Gull. If Bald Eagles are reduced to working hard to catch gulls, this indicates why we saw no gannets. The billfish (aka Atlantic Saury, skipjack) were not there. We also saw more than a hundred American Robin. Most were flying over as we started and then a half dozen feeding on mountain-ash berries as we finished. To warm up we consumed some very delicious chowder, amply supplied with various crustaceans and mollusks at the home of Mary and David Johnston. The quality of the food and company resulted in very little birding after lunch. Thanks to all who came from Georges RIver, Mira, Port Hawkesbury, St Anns Bay, Creignish, and Winnipeg to participate.
