All: There were essentially 3 large flocks of Canada Geese in the Onslow-Masstown_N. River Road area today. A large flock, 1000+ on the East side of the McWilliam Rd was best seen in the a.m. - still coming in at 11:30 from the large silo with nearby penned feeder cattle at the top of the hill. I just drove in alongside the silo, but that might upset the owner. In mid-afternoon, most were on the opposite side of the road, and then flushed to their original fields. There was a smaller flock - perhaps 800, on the west side of the North River Rd, before the (goose devoid) quarry. Another similar flock was to the north of the Shore Rd that slants off Hi-way 4 about 2 km before the McElmon Rd. to Masstown Market. Like Eric Mills last week, I thought almost all were "Atlantic" Canadas (B.C. canadensis), but many were not was white breasted as the Atlantic Coast flocks (from Newfoundland?) and may have been from Labrador and W. Ungava, QC. There was a small minority of decidely dusky-breasted, somewhat smaller, thin-necked birds that were presumably subsp. interior from Ungava. I only saw a few that might have been small (dwarfed) interior from Greenland. The McWilliam Rd. flock had the 4 Snow Geese (1 parent, 3 young, that Eric saw there earlier. There were two different young Snow Geese later with the Shore Rd flock. I think all were "Greater Snow Geese" from size, long necks and bills. It may be a while before more Greenland/Iceland geese appear. Cheers, Ian
