All: I've put a photo for the record on NS-RBA-photos (seabird folder) of the young BROWN BOOBY found dead on Cape Sable on Saturday 29 Oct. by Ronnie D'Entremont and Sharron Marlor. I took a look at the weather patterns in E. N. America before the appearance of the frigatebird 23 Oct. on Seal Island and possibly also responsible for the later find of the booby. Some will remember the strong SW airflow in NS on 18-19 Oct.(stopped the party from going to Seal I. until the 18th, and rained heavily next day). A glance at the archived E. N. Am. weather charts at the NOAA site suggests that is when the birds were propelled here. The charts can be accessed at <http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov/ncep/NCEP> Hit "start over" and go to "analysis charts" and then to the 850 MB (about 1000 m ASL) charts, select your date (2 days at a time useful). Then you will see that on the 19th, a deepening low in E Central N. Am. was producing SW winds of FL and the N. Caribbean of 25-50 knots, and next day airflow off the E. Coast including NS were about the same. Probably enough to have brought these seabirds here. Interestingly, only a few "southern" landbirds were brought here by this wind pattern, although the pattern was similar during the big fallout in early October. Most migrants had probably left SE U.S.A. in later October. Cheers, Ian Ian McLaren
