Hmm . down here in Yarmouth, they have become a rare winter sight. Not the
case back in the '60's or '70's. All things considered, that looks
consistent.

Subject: [NatureNS] Gray Jays and Winter Caching

Hello NatureNB and NatureNS;

I have heard observers bemoan the apparent reduction in the number of Gray
Jays across the Maritimes, though a quick glance at the atlas data doesn't
confirm or refute this. Regardless, the following article (based on
research at Algonquin National Park) is interesting.

http://tinyurl.com/6xymysl

Nova Scotia has the Gray Jay's southern-most sea-level breeding range, and
if climate change affects our region's forests (which it must) then it
follows that the Gray Jay will be impacted as well. This article links the
Gray Jay's success to the presence of spruce.

Food for thought.

Cheers,
