Seal Island also has a wreck on the shore and it has been interesting to watch it break down over the years. Miner wreck off Scatarie Island Wilderness Area? Is this truly an environmental issue? Or merely an aesthetic one? The ship is an empty bulk carrier, not a loaded oil tanker. According to the extensive media coverage, there has been no leakage from it, and the small supply of oil for its generator and its dirty ballast water had been pumped out. If this is correct and there are no other contaminants on board, why not just leave it where it is and let it gradually break up? It will shade out the seaweeds directly under its hull, but provide new substrate for all kinds of marine animals and plants. Eventually it will break up, like the M.V. Fury on a shoal near Liscomb Island (Guysborough Co.), which ran aground in a hurricane in 1965. The Fury is the province's other recent large shipwreck. It is well known to local sea kayakers. My vote is to remove any remaining pollutants from the ship but to leave the wreck to its fate. This must surely be a concern for the wildlife in the area. Can anyone enlighten us on what flora and fauna might be at risk if there is any contamination, be it fuel, oil or any other waste from the wreck?
