ey=0A=0A=0AHi, all-=0A=0AWe had a good look at an Ermine (or Stoat) in Wave=
rley this morning. We were walking on the trail which goes between Shubie P=
ark and Waverley, and saw it in a pile of rocks beside the trail, about 8m =
away. It was sitting upright with most of its body behind a rock, and it ha=
d a vole in its mouth.=0A=0AUnderneath it was white; the rest of the fur wa=
s dark. Because=0A of the lighting, it was difficult to make out jus=
t what colour=0A it actually was, but at this time of year it should=
be brown.=0A=0AIt seemed wary of our presence but not alarmed. Eventually,=
=0A after looking at us for some time, it bounded off, carrying the=
=0A prey item. We were able to see the conspicuous black tip on the=
=0A tail.=0A=0AWe occasionally see them in winter, when they are all=
white,=0A except for the tail. =0A=0AThis species is native to Nort=
h America. It has been introduced=0A to some places such as New Zeal=
and and Britain with serious=0A negative consequences.=0A=0APeter Pa=
