Index of Subjects --90e6ba6e8d4e4e5a9004ace9a74c Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 All, In my days in southern Ontario, avidly pursuing Screech Owls, I had never heard one screech. In talking with others there, it was assumed that the name was poorly given to that bird, because none had ever heard one screech. I get a call every year or two about a screech owl, to which I reply, "How do you know?" The typical answer is, "It was screeching!" In light of Hans' report, I asked a list of over 100 folks who work with owls routinely..."Do screech owls screech?" Only one replied with any certainty, and another with less certainty. The more certain response was, "Screech owls do screech. Generally in a confrontation or defense. First one I ever caught may have been one of the loudest birds I handled." So, although they can screech, they do so very uncommonly, and there are at least two other common owls here which do. Of course, the video from the original reporter will hopefully settle all this.
